I swore to myself that I’d never waste my money on almond butter again. To me, almond butter really never compared to peanut butter, my true love. Yet I’d find myself going to the grocery store seeking a change-up from the jars of peanut butter I’d consume on regular basis and throwing almond butter in my cart as if I were a fan. Every time I’d open the jar, spread some almond butter on a banana/oatmeal/toast and become disappointed. Almond butter is just no peanut butter.
So after several failed attempts in coaxing myself to enjoy almond butter, I made a firm decision to stop buying it. (Don’t get me wrong, I did like almond butter to a degree. I love pretty much all nut butters. It just never compared to peanut butter, and I would rather devote my appetite to PB.)
However, I never swore off to totally stop eating it. So about a month ago when I found BeFitBeFull‘s Barney Almond Butter giveaway, I entered figuring “hey, if I win it’s free, and it’s not like I totally dislike almond butter.” What do you know, I ended up winning the giveaway.
The almond butter I received opened my eyes up to a whole new perspective on ground up almonds! I opened Barney’s Crunchy Almond Butter expecting a creamy, but not fully satisfying nut butter. To my surprise, the almond butter was not just extraordinarily creamy, but extraordinarily tasty as well! The texture reminded me of Jiff peanut butter with the addition of chopped almonds. And like Jiff, Barney’s Almond Butter needs not to be stirred, but it also doesn’t contain any hydrogenated fats. It was slightly sweet, smooth, satisfying, and more than slightly addictive.
While I hadn’t previously thought almond butter’s taste to be superior to peanut butter’s, it has always held a slightly more impressive nutritional content. Almond butter contains almost 50% more monounsaturated fat, as well as more than double the iron, vitamin E, and calcium than that of peanut butter. Barney’s Almond Butter also lists that it contains 20% magnesium.
I’ve finally found an almond butter that tastes as good as it sounds.
After finishing my second jar and switching back to peanut butter, I started to wonder if my peanut butter could actually stand up to Barney’s Almond Butter. Which one’s better? It’s a hard choice. For now, I’ll settle for calling it a tie.
What do you think, peanut butter or Barney’s Almond Butter? Are you a fan of almond butter, and if not, have you tried Barney’s? I’ll definitely be buying this nut butter again. But don’t worry Crazy Richard’s. I won’t forget about your oh-so-tasty peanut butter. I’ll just be buying (and probably eating) double the nut butter 🙂
