Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral

Begun in 1296 and completed in 1436, the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral is a remarkable sight. Encompassing the largest brick dome ever built, 44 stained glass windows, and a length of 502 feet, the church is more than GIGANTIC.  Walk up the 436 steps of its tower, and if you haven’t lost your breath already, you surely will once you get outside at the top.  A spectacular view reveals the entire landlocked city of Florence, surrounded by mountains and filled with more red-roofed buildings than one could count.
