Coffee Addiction Linked to Genes

I haven’t featured a health-related post in quite some time. Not that there hasn’t been tons of interesting health news lately because there’s always new studies buzzing around in the health world. Like this recent study that particularly caught my eye.

If you’re rely on a cup of coffee to free you from the morning blues, you might have your parents to blame. Researchers have identified two genes that can determine just how much caffeine you crave.

Recently reported in the  April issue of PLoS Genetics, the new research suggests that those who carry the “high-consumption” variation of either gene appear to drink more coffee, as opposed to those who carry the “low-consumption” variation. The two genes have previously been linked to the metabolization of caffeine, and in accordance with the new research, appear to be able to determine whether a single cup of joe will make you a nervous jitterbug or a smooth sailer reaching for your next cup.

“It’s really an incredible story,” co-author of the study, Dr. Neil Caporaso of the National Cancer Institute, told USA Today. “People don’t really suspect it, but genetics plays a big role in a lot of behaviors, such as smoking and alcohol consumption. And now it turns out that it has a part in how much caffeine we drink.”

So whether one cup has you shaking like a Polaroid picture, or you need one of those new Starbucks Trenta cups (holding more volume than the human stomach) to get you going, you can thank your genes, and yes, your parents who passed those babies on down to you.

I saw this article. The entire time I was reading it I was picture both of my parents drinking their coffee FIRST thing in the morning! They are addicts, and they have passed that gene down to me 🙂 I’m not too worried about it, as I don’t drink more than I should…I know it. The only bad thing is that my dentist always say, “how much coffee to you drink”??! My back bottom teeth are stained. But hey, at least the front ones aren’t!
